About
Midtown Vice is the musical project of John Mueller, based out of northern New Jersey. Starting in 2021, the project has evolved throughout the years, contributing to the cultivation of a unique sound, blending grittiness and ethereality. The combination of dreamy guitars, texturized soundscapes, ambiguous lyrics, and spacey synthesizers, contributes to a surreal, sonic atmosphere within the music of Midtown Vice. Everything is recorded in a modest bedroom studio, consisting of just two microphones, a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 interface, and Logic Pro through a Macbook.
Midtown Vice’s brand new debut EP, “Through the Roof”, contains six songs total. The styles of the EP range from dream pop, shoegaze, slowcore, emo, folk, psychedelic pop, with a healthy dose of the avant-garde. The order of the tracks is highly intentional, with each of them becoming more experimental as the EP progresses, which starts to gradually diverge from the conventional definitions of what music could be, and how it can be arranged. The themes of these songs revolve around nostalgia, loneliness, old habits, and the human condition. They evoke a wide range of emotions that often clash with each other, but can be navigated on an intuitive level.
All of the artwork is creative directed by John. As for “Through the Roof”, his father drew the original sketch for the EP cover art, then was further edited in Photoshop by John. Art and surrealism go hand in hand for Midtown Vice, emphasizing the importance of the visual aspects of music, and how music and art are one and the same.
